Avurudu Udanaya 2026

සිංහල සහ හින්දු අළුත් අවුරුදු උදානය 2026 - අප්‍රේල් 19

The Sinhala New Year is a special time for all Sri Lankans to come together with their families and celebrate traditional customs. This year too, Sri Lankaramaya, on the guidance of the chief Incumbent monk, Most Ven Walgama Munindawansa Thero, with the help of Ven monks, devotees, and the Sri Lanka New Zealand Buddhist Trust, organized the celebration of the New Year the largest Sri Lankan gathering ever in Auckland,.

Originally, the event was planned for the 12th of April, but Cyclone Vaianu was forecast to hit Auckland that day. Sri Lankaramaya had to reschedule the event to the 19th of April, a Herculean effort. As a testament to the contributions and sacrifices of all involved, it was successfully held on the 19th of April. The chief guest, Rt Hon Christopher Luxon, accommodated the date change in his busy schedule, as did other invitees.

Following the tradition, Avurudu Udanaya 2026 also showcased many Sri Lankan and other cultural dances and songs, Sri Lankan New Year games, and traditional Sri Lankan cuisine, which were enjoyed by the Sri Lankan community and others.

Opening ceremony

The program started at 7:30 in the morning, with Loku Hamuduruwo giving the five precepts to everyone present. The Chief Guest of the event, Rt Hon Christopher Luxon, arrived at the temple at 8:30 AM, and was welcomed by the resident monks, NZSLBT officials, and the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to New Zealand, H.E Prasanna Gamage.
